Waiting

by Ken Robert on December 8, 2009

The waitress says hello.
The diners don’t reply.
They’re buried in their menus and picking out their sides.
Baked beans, carrots, cottage cheese.
They think about the yams.

The waitress asks how she can help,
and one man lifts an eye,
Then quickly drops it back again to find out what’s inside.
Onions, peppers, grade-A beef.
The meatloaf trumps the ham.

The waitress grabs the silent air
and tucks it by her side.
She’s buried in her dreams, her future’s on her mind.
Brighter, bolder, jackass free.
She’ll soon invoke her plan.
